One Minute With Beau Burgess, Retail Sustainability Consultant, Siemens

16 years in FM.

Take us on the journey of your career path. How did you end up where you are?

As a teenager, I was lucky enough to find my calling in retail, moving to Beverly Hills, California, at age 23 to lead a team on Rodeo Drive. My career took off from there. Working for some of the industry’s top-tier brands, I had the opportunity to open stores across the country. In 2011, we opened a LEED-certified store in the Los Angeles market, and I gravitated toward green initiatives, working to find ways stores could reduce their impact on our environment, along with how store teams could impact communities with a sustainability mindset.

What’s a typical day like for you?

Days are full of client meetings, introductions and countless video calls, as we are all accustomed to. Thankfully, more companies are going back into the office, and I have been able to meet and shake some hands in person as of late. The days are fast-paced and never the same.

What advice do you have for someone just starting out in FM?

Never stop asking questions. I thought after 20-plus years of opening stores, managing company operations, leading large field teams and being around our facilities leaders that I understood the complexities of the role … I had no idea. ConnexFM has provided an incredible way to connect naturally with amazing people in the industry. I would not be where I am in my career change if it wasn’t for putting in the effort to connect with the ConnexFM team.

If you could describe the industry in a few words, what would you say?
Integrating people and processes in their places or properties.

Outside of work, what’s your greatest passion?

When I’m not working, my passions stem through creativity. As a side project, I do art therapy with special needs centers and women’s shelters locally in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.
