Betty Hernandez, Store Facilities Manager, The Container Store — 26 years in FM
What’s a typical day like for you?
A typical day is all about problem-solving. I manage a small team that oversees the day-to-day break fixes. I can’t get through my day without them. I also manage the handover from Real Estate of every new store opening and handle the lingering punch list items through first-year warranty.
As a Co-Chair of Connexion100, what value will it provide?
I feel that this will help increase awareness of the key initiatives that ConnexFM has in its vision for the future. We have a great team of facilities management leaders collaborating on ideas and working together to see things through.
Take us on your career journey. How did you get started in the FM industry?
I started part-time with The Container Store when my son started pre-K. I didn’t think this was going to be my career; it was supposed to be interior design. A co-worker referred me and had me interview for an Administrative Assistant position that opened in General Services and Purchasing. I got the job and have had several positions as the department evolved into what it is now, Store Facilities.
If you could describe the FM industry in a few sentences, what would you say?
The FM industry is made up of some amazing undercover superheroes. Two sides working together to find solutions. Fixing what’s broken to managing attitudes and keeping a sharp eye on their targets.
Outside of work, what are your passions or hobbies?
Family is everything to me. My plans are built around them. I have my own craft room to keep me busy and a space my husband stays out of. I can’t stay still and always have to be doing something!
